No doubt Hillary Clinton is the Democratic National Committee’s candidate of choice, her candidacy looked upon as a cake-walk, the election hers for the taking. The tragedy at Benghazi changed that to some degree, and lately the discovery of over 300 emails containing classified materials on her “homebrew” private server are creating dark clouds over the Clinton camp. As a result, the polls are beginning to show that Hillary is losing ground with potential voters, and her campaign is scrambling to shore up its base and regain momentum. That the devout socialist Bernie Sanders is outstripping Ms. Clinton in the polls is an indication of trouble, as well as a worrying reminder of how Barack Obama came out of nowhere in 2008 and dashed her hopes for the nomination back then.
Nevertheless, we are here to talk about the possibility of Joe Biden tossing his hat in the ring. You might ask, What does this have to do with Ol’ Uncle Joe, the shotgun man? Well, as much as the DNC would love to have Hillary on the podium operating with a clean slate and once again admired as the smartest woman in the world, they cannot ignore the ominous clouds hanging over her campaign. At the same time, the DNC must be in an absolute tizzy to think that Bernie Sanders might gain the nomination through either Hillary’s stumbles or default. Bernie Sanders is not their favorite pony and the stable is rather empty—except for (maybe) Uncle Joe.
So what is Joe up to these days? Joe is waiting to see what Hillary will do in response to the email fiasco and where that investigation is headed. You see, if there is one thing that the Clintons prize more than winning, it is saving face, as they say in the Asian culture. Mrs. Clinton does not want it to appear that she lost the race for the nomination just as she did in 2008 because that, then, would be her legacy—LOSER! No, she will avoid that at all costs. Biden says that his decision to run may come as late as October, which will give Hillary and her minions time to see whether or not her campaign is about to implode under the weight of these allegations and, if necessary, come up with a face-saving strategy.
If indeed the Clinton campaign continues its current downward trend and cannot come up with any spin to revitalize it, you can bet that Hillary will want to have the option of stepping away from the race, claiming that the burden of dealing with these charges has undermined her ability to run for the office. The DNC will then give Joe Biden the nod to step in as the proxy for Hillary and, hopefully, stall the momentum of Sanders’ campaign. In a last ditch effort to save the White House for the Democrats, Biden will run as the trusty Vice President who served during Mr. Obama’s (allegedly) successful reign in office. His popularity with voters may also receive a boost arising from sympathy over the recent death of his son.
Of course, the astute reader will remember the 2008 campaign and how poorly Biden did in his bid for the nomination and wonder how he could be the DNC's pony. Well, there are two reasons: Biden is controllable and loyal to the party for one, and two, they will be counting on his association with Obama—and Obama the man is all that is left for the Democrats to celebrate since real success never happened under his presidency. Bernie Sanders and Al Gore won’t figure in the DNC’s considerations at all. Mr. Sanders is not a flag-waver for the Democrats; he is more interested in crediting his solutions to his socialist orientation than to the Democrat Party, and Al Gore has long since been seen as one who’s gone off the deep end. (And, Elizabeth Warren still thinks she is an Indian.) What can you do? Biden is the only safe choice.
The Clinton camp is not throwing in the towel yet, but you can bet that Hillary’s advisors are deeply troubled to the point that they are now worried about Hillary’s legacy. This is her last go-round to make a run for the presidency, and as bad as she may want it or believe that she deserves it, she is not going to gamble with her legacy by chancing that history will remember her unkindly as one who could not cut the mustard. She is going to give her legacy utmost priority and, in the coming weeks, a decision will be forthcoming long before she is too far down that slippery slope of looking like a loser.
Meanwhile, if you happen to see Joe Biden in your back yard, just fire your shotgun into the air a couple of times and he will be gone—he said so! Whether Biden could be the DNC’s savior is yet to be seen but one thing you can count on, if he gets into the race, there will be some amusing sound-bite nuggets out there on the air waves. I can almost see Ol’ Joe up there on the podium now, railing and grinning as he explains how he and his magna cum laude mentor saved America from its destructive path. And remember, Biden is scandal-free—he had no idea anything was going on within the current administration. Unlike Obama, he does not learn about administrative naughtiness (or anything else) from the nightly news. Stay tuned!
