Even if Obama actually gives up the money, he will stand alone in doing so. When has he ever led others while occupying the Oval Office? Oh yeah, I remember…back when he hammered out that deal with Speaker Boehner on the debt ceiling only to come back and add $400 billion dollars to the demand at the last minute….he almost had a deal there but he really did not want one as it might have given the impression that the right side of the aisle does have some room for compromise. Instead, he had rather hold back and then point the finger of blame across the aisle. He can’t blame Bush effectively anymore but he can point and scream. “It’s not me, it’s those guys!”
One of the most effective tools a president can have in his bag when dealing with both sides of the aisle in Congress is the ability to sit down with Congressional leaders and state, “we need to do this because it is what the American people want.” That brings a certain sobriety to the proceedings if all in attendance are seriously concerned about the “will of the people”. At the same time, one cannot lie about “what the American people want” and expect it to stand up to scrutiny. Just look at ObamaCare….the majority of Americans never wanted it but somehow we got stuck with it. Obama wants to tout it as his legacy while the majority of Americans look upon it as a pure disaster taking place right in front of their eyes. The truth is all around us yet we are stuck with the flim-flam.
Personally, the time at which Obama will be on the “mashed potatoes, chicken, and green pea” circuit making empty speeches and stuffing wads of money into his pockets cannot come quickly enough. When I see this guy in the Oval Office I am reminded of the day that I discovered termites in my bedroom wall and how time seemed to just drag by between the discovery and the arrival of my pest-control agent. Sadly, termites are far less harmless that Obama and his ilk. They do tremendous damage throughout this country each year but it pales in light of the damage Obama and company will do to America over an eight year period. If you hear applause on his last day in office, it will come from my hands.
Looking back over our history as a nation, we have certainly had our share of “flim-flam” politicians in elected office willing to re-define words or employ terms which most Americans can easily misinterpret as “what they want to hear”. When Huey Long ran for office, his campaign manager was surprised to hear Huey make the claim that he hitched the mule to the wagon and drove his grandparents to High Mass at the Catholic church five miles away each Sunday. When the manager told Long that he did not know that he was Catholic, Long replied…”Nonsense, we didn’t even have a mule!” Still, in his political wisdom, Long knew that it was what the people wanted to hear in that region of the country.
Down in Louisiana, John Edwards was running for re-election as governor of the State. His previous term was froth with criminal accusations of under-the-table money, pay-offs, and Edwards’ back-door deals. Given the burden of the evidence, many politicians would have just thrown in the towel…but not Edwards. When asked about his chances of winning re-election, Edwards replied, “The only way I can lose this election is to either wake up with a dead woman or a live boy in my bed.” Off-hand, I would say that is a fairly confident position for a candidate and, in this case, an accurate one as Edwards won the election handily and returned to his old ways. Eventually, justice prevailed and Edwards was slapped with the wrath of the courts but one can only guess how much money he stuffed in his socks along the way.
Then along comes Bill Clinton. You know, the Rhodes Scholar who decided that the best place to start fibbing was down in Arkansas. Once he had enough practice, he took on the same instinct as a termite and started working his way outward to the surface. The difference between a good politician and a great one is the lack of conscience and the demonstration thereof. For example, many years ago, back in my hometown southern county, we had a state senator who got burned by the FBI in a horse-racing pay-off. The ol’ boy got caught in the motel with the bag-man…money in hand plus the courier was wired and the conversation was recorded. The senator was cussing like a sailor on the tape. When the recording was played back for him, he had a great explanation, “Well, if I had known that I was being recorded, I would not have used such language”. Clinton obviously studied under such great politicians allowing him to come up with, “Well, it depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is.”
But, let’s get back to the subject at hand…Obama and his self-imposed pay cut. No doubt, media stuff-shirt, Chris Matthews, is tingling all up and down his legs with this announcement. After all, he already considers Obama to be the perfect American citizen and says so every chance he gets. With that clarity, one might assume that Matthews has actually seen Obama’s birth-certificate. Matthews cannot figure out why so many of us do not want to follow Obama’s direction and immediately pulls out the race card as the basis for our attitude. Unfortunately, Matthews has no conscious awareness of the actions of a socialist, race is not even a consideration. Knowing that, I think I feel my legs tingling a bit.
Let’s get down to the meat and the bone. Taking a symbolic pay-cut is such a noble thing on your part Mr. Obama, but your actions which accompany it speak volumes about your intent. On the one hand, you volunteer to hand back $20,000 of your pay in the interest of easing the pain of a Sequestration which you and your cronies designed from the git-go. On the other hand, and in the same week, you challenge Congress to spend $100 million dollars on brain-mapping research this year. Here we are as a nation borrowing 47 cents of every dollar we spend and you are thinking up new ways to spend money that we do not have. Might I note that your gestures are both symbolic and noble but there is not a lick of common-sense in either one of them. People who take pay-cuts do not look for new ways to spend money!
President Obama indicated that $100 million was a rather paltry sum of money against the backdrop of our current spending and debt levels. The point is difficult to argue against but who put us there? That would be politicians like him who care little for the future of America’s financial health and look only to feather their own bed and sell their own snake-oil. If the president wants to impress me and many other Americans, he will come up with a viable budget and engage in some actual spending cuts which will impact our deficit and begin to reduce our debt. Of course, that is not going to happen because that effort would require initiative and character and this president has neither. Instead, we can simply expect four more years of “flim-flam” and “snake-oil”.
