Burroughs also had another quote which I believe is appropriate to this piece. He stated, “The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention.” Obama likes to dress his image in “great intentions”. Unfortunately, those great intentions never quite make it to the surface. They are always twisted and come out differently than he explained them in the beginning and all the fault of someone else. He intended that the stimulus money would invigorate the U.S. economy but his actions in distributing that money allowed it to flow almost everywhere but directly into the economy thus it was simply a waste of taxpayer money--hard-earned money, and money we did not have in the first place as a country. His intent was to provide those without healthcare with coverage at affordable pricing. All of that turned into a pipedream and left America and our healthcare industry saddled with legislation which ultimately could break our financial back as a people and a nation. Somehow or other, that outcome was not his fault either to hear him or the liberal media explain it.
Recently we were in a “shutdown” phase of federal government operation due to a lack of a budget which required the Congress issue yet another “continuing resolution” to fund the government. Obama blames the Republicans and other conservatives associated with The Tea Party for the present state of affairs. You might pause here and remember that when Obama took office, the Democrats controlled both elements of the Congress holding the majority of seats yet for that two year period still failed to deliver a budget plan. The “continuing resolution” option seems to suit Obama’s spending desires nicely and without problems until the next debt ceiling level is reached and must be approved by a Congress that his party no longer totally controls. Government shutdown is a misnomer here in that just over 83% of the government was still functioning but Obama and his ilk absolutely pushed every element of the shutdown to make it as painfully obvious to the public as possible hoping that the conservative side of the aisle would get the blame.
President Obama is short on skill-set for the particular job which he has successfully obtained, the Presidency of the United States of America. The most glaring and obvious missing links are his lack of leadership skills and his inability to negotiate or compromise. Anytime he encounters resistance, he simply runs to the first available microphone and starts whining like some spoiled brat who just got his butt kicked and his football taken away from him. The finger of blame flies all about the room but never points in his direction. This leads us to the other missing skill, his glaring inability to accept that as President, the buck stops with him. Whether he is at fault or not, he is the elected leader of this nation thus when the system breaks down, the fault lies at his door just as it has for every President who has held that high office.
President Obama claims that he has “bent over backwards” reaching across the aisle to conservative leaders in order to gain agreements. That said, let us think back to the last debt ceiling dance and remember how Speaker Boehner finally agreed with Obama on a solution and thought they had a plan in place to move forward. That progress all came to a screeching halt when Obama then demanded that an additional $400 billion dollars in spending be approved for the agreement already in hand. Meeting resistance, the President elected to drive things into a sequestration binder which he stated “would never happen”. Well guess what folks, it did! But, Obama was not to be blamed and he made that clear just as quickly as he could run to a microphone.
The American people are getting duped all around by this President and his administration. Spending is out of control; the economy is in the stagnation tank; unemployment lingers above 7%; more and more companies are cutting back employee hours due to ObamaCare and the definition of full-time employment; the National Debt is accumulating at a rate that will likely double what was owed prior to Obama taking office. Given all these and many other reasons for alarm, some in Washington have attempted to put the brakes on but are confronted with being blamed for all that has happened.
Our federal government takes in approximately $200 billion dollars in revenue per calendar month amounting to approximately $2.4 trillion dollars per year. This comes mostly from taxation of the America people and employers. This is the money that “we do have” to cover our needs as a nation. That is not enough for Obama and company who desire to spend an additional $1.2 to 1.4 trillion dollars that “we do not have” annually. This is the trigger which continues to require the “debt ceiling” of our nation to be raised. But, our President Obama says that it is not his fault…he is “just trying to pay our bills”. Unfortunately, he is trying to pay our bills with money that we do not have as a nation and the size of that “do not have” grows each year that Obama is in office. Still…we have no budget but it is not his fault…or so he claims.
It is high time that the American public began to ask our elected officials to show some fiscal restraint and responsibility. Those traits seem to be quite rare in Washington D.C. today. Those who do have the spine to raise that point are castigated by the Democrats and even by members of their own party for their attempts to “right the ship”. Sadly, too much of the American public also reacts in the same manner. Since when do we throw rocks at those with the courage to stand up and try to do the right and sane thing when it comes to our financial future as a nation?
In this mode of “government shutdown”, agencies throughout the federal government have been instructed by officials of the Obama Administration to make things as painful and obvious as possible to the public at every opportunity. Parks and national monuments have been shut-down unnecessarily and without forethought. American veterans of World War II were turned away from national monuments in Washington that they have earned to right to see. For most of them, there is little time left to wait as they are in the twilight of their years and may never be in Washington again. Officials have even made attempts to keep the public from the ocean in areas along the eastern seaboard and in Florida. A President who was truly a leader would not stand for such outcomes nor would he/she allow them. In the case of Obama, he looks upon it all as something to facilitate his desires and that is all that is important…to hell with the American people.
America is standing at a financial fork in the road. We can no longer allow our elected officials to continue to “kick the can” down the road and delay dealing with the consequences. We can no longer squander the funds of programs like Social Security to mask the spending and eventually cheat Americans out of their just due. We have arrived at the point at which priorities must be set and choices must be made. Unfortunately, we only have a handful of brave souls in Washington willing to strap on that task and find a solution. The rest want to continue the “status quo” further burying the American people in debt all in the name of “putting a chicken in every pot” of those who find working for a living an unpalatable choice in their lives. A real leader would face that music and attempt to lead it rather than being a party to the blame game and pretending the situation does not exist. Remember that when you hear someone touting the leadership skills of Barack Obama.
John Burroughs also observed, “The spirit of a man can endure only so much and when it is broken only a miracle can mend it.” We live in a time when some who lead us have but one goal and that is to “break our spirit” as a people. Is that an outcome you are willing to accept as an American?
