Most of us Baby Boomer types can remember back when this process began. Oh, it began simply and innocently enough back in the day when commonsense dictated that most folks be respectful of others. It also seemed rather harmless then, when our Language Police from the higher education side of the house simply corrected words deemed harsh with substitutes that couched starker realities. One of the first terms that I remember undergoing this metamorphosis was “handicapped.” Instead of that term, it was recommended that we say “physically challenged” so as not to hurt the feelings of those who dealt with disabilities. As I say, at the time, it all seemed rather innocent.
Fast forward a few decades and we see that things have changed beyond the bounds of our imagination. We have transitioned from being tutored by the Language Police to being manipulated and silenced by those who want to use political correctness as a lever for their liberal leftist agenda. Any opposition can be countered by playing the political correctness card and labeling the offender as crude, rude, and a racist. Oh, and toss in a bigot for good measure. It’s ironic that political correctness flies right out the window when the Left starts throwing labels about the room.
Just recently, presidential candidate Jeb Bush was being criticized by the media for using the term anchor baby. Suddenly, a term that has been around for years and widely used is a total no-no, and the media, with all its Leftist leanings, is quick to police it when the term comes from anyone on the conservative side. The fact of the matter is the term anchor baby is quite accurate when used to describe the practice of foreigners coming to this country specifically to birth a child who will be granted US citizenship, thus paving the way for the entire family to come here later. There is nothing derogatory about the term, but those on the Left do not want to hear it used because it reminds too many of us how much non-citizens are stretching the boundary of our Constitution and our budget.
We have seen the same papering over of reality with other terms, particularly those concerning border security, immigration and terrorists. Neither the liberal media nor the current administration in the White House can bring itself to use terms like illegal immigrant or Islamic terrorist. They want to substitute the word undocumented for illegal so you forget that the person entered this country in an unlawful fashion. Today, a Middle Eastern college student of the Muslim faith can come here, overstay his visa, make frequent trips to terrorist lands, then proceed to kill innocent people. Yet neither our media or the Obama Administration can find a way mouth the words Islamic terrorist. Instead, the young man is portrayed as an average college student driven to his actions by the cruel bullying of those who have no respect for his culture—yes, it’s our fault, not his.
Recently, Donald Trump held a press conference with various reporters attending from several media outlets. Just as Trump took the stage, Univision’s Jorge Ramos immediately began to speak, but Trump acknowledged a different reporter. As that reporter began to speak, Mr. Ramos interrupted, demanding that Trump answer his question. Trump advised Ramos that it was not his turn, but Ramos continued trying to deliver a tirade regarding immigration and the Hispanic community. When Ramos refused to sit down after repeated requests by Mr. Trump to wait his turn, security escorted him from the press conference. The following day, all the media could seem to report was how rudely Ramos had been treated. In truth, Ramos was the rude one, not only to Trump but to his fellow reporters in the room. But you see, Ramos, as a defender of illegal immigrants, is a politically correct protected class. In truth, Ramos is anything but a journalist—he is a hack just like Al Sharpton and more than willing to carry the water for any dirtbag who wants to go after a conservative.
The United States of America is headed down a very bad road—a road paved on top of the lies and distortions that comprise political correctness. There are factions in the world who want our government, our Constitution, and our culture to be eradicated from both the past and the future. Sadly, we have fellow citizens among us who are more than willing to participate in that effort for their own desires and gain. Socialism and Communism both thrive on mind-control and the policing of speech. Both are rooted in total fabrications and lies that promise a Utopia which never comes to pass but is always out there on the horizon somewhere, just beyond our reach.
Political correctness—either in word or action—is not harmless. We must get past that mindset and realize that these seemingly innocuous efforts are all part of a purposeful process to gain greater and greater control over the people. If they can control what you say and how you say it, then one day they will control both what you think and what you do. And at that point, liberty will become a memory.
