Ms. Clinton believes and has stated that an important element of her smart power policy is for the USA to learn to “empathize” with its enemies. Now understand something here. Most of the time, the enemies of the USA have declared themselves as such. It is not the USA just randomly deciding that some nation is an enemy, but the other way around. Those nations decide that we are the enemy and broadcast it for all the world to hear. Their ideology, their attitudes, and their actions all spell out their intentions toward the USA. Nevertheless, Ms. Clinton has decided that we have not atoned sufficiently for our dark past and it is we who must alter our behavior.
Let’s take the case of ISIS or ISIL or whatever the hell they are being called this week. Here is a religiously-based (they say) ideology which really does not have a “homeland” per se. It is a sect made up of rabid, religious fanatics who have stated publicly that the American infidels must die for their sins against Islam and the Muslim world. Given the opportunity, they would behead all of us in short order. Their stated goals include seeing the flag of ISIS flying over New York City and Washington D.C. Even so, following Ms. Clinton’s counsel, let us not feel threatened and decide that it is high time that we took the initiative to avoid such outcomes. No, instead let us all sit down and contemplate the mindset of these maniacs holding sharp knives and try to be empathetic. Perhaps we can find a way in our hearts to let them know that we are sorry and hey, we get that beheading thing too! Then we can all sit around the camp fire, hold hands, and sing Kumbaya. Only a nutcase would suggest anything of the sort.
Now, if Ms. Clinton wants to talk like a nutcase, this is America and she has every right to do so. But, don’t get up on the podium and declare that you want to be the next President of the United States and then offer up this insanity under the catchy name of smart power. Because any nation that truly considers itself an “enemy” of the USA is not breathing a sigh of relief and saying “Oh, thank God” (or somebody like God), or “Wow, we can all be buddies now!” Instead, they gleefully read this as yet another example of our weakness, stupidity, and naiveté.
If anything, the outcome at Benghazi bears witness to Ms. Clinton’s naiveté. In her attempt to “empathize” with our enemies, she decided first to ignore Ambassador Stevens’ pleas for military reinforcement. After the attack—and somewhat disingenuously—she insisted that the attack on our consulate was caused by a video disparaging the Prophet Muhammad posted to YouTube by some ignorant American. Thus, we were at fault. Surely, however, the vast majority of Americans see through a fabrication created simply to relieve anyone from the President on down of any accountability for this tragedy.
If we agreed with Ms. Clinton, we would need to identify anyone in our leadership or in our military who would even contemplate military action against a perceived threat and re-educate them. Military action? No! That’s old hat and archaic! In the 21st Century, we sit down and empathize—try to understand what factors are driving our enemies to want to behead us. Okay. That takes about five seconds. It’s the fanatical, radical interpretation of statements in the Koran. We get it. Now that we have that figured out, I suggest that Ms. Clinton lead a delegation to go meet these barbarians at some lonely desert site and see what kind of reception she and her comrades receive. I further suggest that someone videotape it from afar so that they survive the ceremonial beheadings.
As a conservative with an awareness of history and some military experience under my belt, I know for a fact that we do not get to choose our enemies or their behavior—never have and never will. I hope that Ms. Clinton continues to use smart power as the centerpiece of her 2016 presidential campaign. I hope that she shouts it from the rooftops of every major city in America because I am fairly certain that the longer she talks about it, the stupider it will sound to the electorate. You see, we are all not as stupid as ObamaCare architect Jonathan Gruber thinks we are. Ms. Clinton can burn all the energy she wants spouting this spineless gibberish, it will be to no avail.
There is, of course, the moniker that seems to be permanently assigned to Ms. Clinton by the progressive, liberal Left: “The Smartest Woman in the World”. If that were true, Condoleezza Rice would have tried Ms. Clinton’s Love your Enemies approach with the Israelis and the Palestinians. For decades, Israel’s leaders have been pressured to “empathize” with the Palestinians—to give and get, to heal the divide. In many instances, Israel has tried to do exactly that and what has come of it? Israel is still under attack from the Palestinians and others who are determined to destroy her and wipe her from the face of the earth. Let’s be clear here—there is no room for empathy and compassion when one’s enemies want to eradicate you. To suggest such a thing is to fall far short of being The Smartest Woman in the World.
The 2016 presidential election is a pivotal one. It will be an event that is both symbolic and revealing as to how Americans envision our future in the world. If Ms. Clinton wins the high office of president, pursues the socialist agenda of Obama, and then undermines our position of strength in the face of radical, fanatic enemies, then we are surely doomed. Teddy Roosevelt was fond of an old West African proverb, “Speak softly but carry a big stick.” Here Roosevelt was emphasizing that one must negotiate intelligently but also always be prepared to use force if necessary. Ms. Clinton’s smart power foreign policy misses that point altogether and tosses the stick over the cliff. Any candidate for president who would publicly espouse such nonsense cannot possibly be The Smartest Woman in the World—the dumbest maybe, but certainly not the smartest. Ms. Clinton needs to wise up a lot and find some advisors who are far less naïve. We stupid Americans demand it!
