Climate change is and always has been a liberal effort to dupe the people into believing that mankind can destroy the world and that the fix for that is essentially to redistribute wealth—although they would never admit to or call it that. Ironically, the Left generally opposes the teachings of the Church or anything the Pope has to say about marriage or premarital sex or abortion, but they are cheering on the Pope with this one.
The Left hysterically claimed if left unchecked, by 2050, global temperatures would rise to a level that would wipe out most of the polar bears. Well, surprise. In 2015, we already exceeded those temperatures, and both the polar cap and the polar bear are fine. In fact, the polar bear population has doubled! You won’t hear that from the mainstream media, of course. But you will hear over and over again what Cardinal Turkson (the Pope’s spokesperson on the environment and immigration) said: “Fortunately, in the United States, there are dissenting voices, people who are against Trump’s positions . . . This, for us, is a sign that little by little, other positions and political voices will emerge and so we hope that Trump himself will reconsider some of his decisions.”
Pope Francis pointed out in his challenge to Trump that the United States must re-engage as leader of the world on the issue of climate change or risk being supplanted by China in that role, since China has recently begun to espouse support for environmental causes. My view is this: Go ahead and let China have the lead on this one. Who the hell cares? If what the Left claims is true about climate change, then China is the perfect poster child—after all, it is they who historically have been the worst polluters of all. Would that not be great for the cause—getting China to both pay up and admit their guilt all at once? But, the reality is, that is not the point.
Let us be clear here. Almost ninety of China’s electric grid is supported by coal-burning electric generators, many in disrepair and unsafe. Add to this the fact that China has less than fifty years of domestic coal reserves. Now it becomes obvious they have a looming problem of massive proportions. So how does China solve this problem? How do they bolster their coal reserves? Well, the obvious answer here is to go out to the world coal market and see what it will cost. But, alas—who has the coal to sell? Well, I’ll be a ring-tailed idiot! It’s the USA! And why does the USA have plenty of reserves? Because former president Barack Obama used his mighty pen and executive orders to gut the U.S. coal industry by banning coal’s use for electric power plants. He also took it a step further and froze the use of natural gas in that application at present levels.
Now understand this: Obama did not ban the mining of U.S. coal; he simply banned using coal to produce electricity in the USA, making it a rather useless commodity here. At the same time, he sure freed up a lot of coal to sell to China—by the right people, of course. Consequently, China can continue to burn the same coal that the U.S. would have burned, and send the resulting carbon emissions high into the same atmosphere that the USA would have, and somehow that is okay. Why? Because in this scenario, coal becomes the lever to bring the USA under the control of whoever is driving the Climate Change Train, be it the U.N. or China or the signatories to the Paris Agreement on climate. Although Obama proudly signed onto the Agreement, President Trump has indicated a willingness to no longer participate.
Pope Francis is worried that the USA will not recognize and assume its role as leader on climate change. Why is that? The answer is simple: As long Donald Trump questions the validity of climate change, the rest of the world will too. In 2012, Donald Trump tweeted that, "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive." He has since said he was joking, but I don’t think he was. The Pope has tied climate change to social justice, fretting that wealthier nations will plunder the earth’s riches leaving poorer nations to starve. Sounds a little like that redistribution of wealth thing again, does it not? The Pope also believes that scientists “work free of political, economic or ideological interests.” With all due deference to His Holiness, has it not occurred to him that the issue of climate change has been politicized and co-opted by the Left—the same Left who has no use for him or his opinions unless it benefits them? Think about it!
