Once again, Orlando has supplied cannon fodder for yet another effort by the Liberal Loonies to take guns away from law-abiding citizens. That one lone nut case decided that a gay night club would be an easy target because the bar was situated in a gun-free zone is of little consequence to them. Nope. They are quite united in blathering on that if we just had stricter gun control laws, this tragedy could have been avoided.
Fairly quickly, it was ascertained that this was an act of terror. Whether ISIS was behind it was initially in question but soon it appeared that the shooter—Omar Mir Seddique Mateen—had not carried out the attack at the behest of any terrorist organization.
Omar Mir Seddique Mateen was born in 1986 in New York of immigrant parents from Afghanistan. In 2009 he married a woman from Uzbekistan, but that marriage ended in divorce in 2011. Mateen’s former wife now claims he was bipolar, physically abusive, mentally-ill and engaged in steroid use. Because of inflammatory statements he made at work, the FBI had questioned Mateen twice in the past but apparently found no reason to keep him under surveillance. To be fair, under current guidelines, the FBI is prohibited from monitoring potential terrorists if evidence of criminal activity is not found within six months. Mateen’s case was extended once but closed after a total of ten months. For nine years he was employed for G4S, the largest private security firm in the world, most recently as an armed security guard. How did he pass two of their background checks? Given the FBI scrutiny and G4S background checks, it is hard to know just what new gun control measures would have kept Mateen from procuring weapons.
In France, the Orlando tragedy would be classified first and foremost as an act of terrorism and dealt with accordingly. In the USA, however, this tragedy has already been referred to repeatedly as a mass killing carried out by an individual who hated gays (making it a “hate” crime) and whose access to guns had been too easy. You see, in Obama’s world and the liberal mindset, it doesn’t matter if one is a terrorist, or a fanatic, or a citizen who wants to protect his family. We’re all lumped together and gun ownership is the problem. Is it me, or does that logic border on insanity?
As usual, Obama is creating a sense of urgency around a tragedy that, after all, can’t be undone. Forget the details, forget the killer, forget what spurred the killing—the reasons for which are still murky at best—the point is to use the perceived emergency to get the guns out of the hands of the public. Every tyrant who has ever ruled has done the exact same thing. Society must be disarmed by degrees until it is at the mercy of the tyrant. In effect, Obama wants the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution abolished because if that one falls, it will be so much easier to topple the rest.
According to the Congressional Research Service, there are approximately 300 million guns in the USA—a figure that is roughly twice what it was in 1968. Even if new laws were enacted, these firearms already exist. According to the Center for Disease Control, there were 11,208 homicide deaths related to firearms in 2013. That amounts to approximately 3.4 deaths per 100,000 people. That same year, the number of deaths caused by motor vehicles stood at 10.7 per 100,000 and accidental poisoning accounted for 12.7 per 100,000. No-one is suggesting that we outlaw cars or cleaning stuffs, but the hysteria over the number of gun deaths seen in that context is exaggerated. Further, there is conclusive evidence that stricter gun control does not deter violence. In Chicago, a city with very strict gun laws, the number of deaths due to shootings is almost equal to the number of Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined—a staggering statistic that belies the effectiveness of tough gun laws.
On Sunday afternoon (half an hour late to the podium) Obama was quick to shift the blame from Mateen to us, saying, “This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well.” The Daily News’ blared the despicable headline, “Thanks, NRA,” intimating their opposition to an “assault rifle” ban was singularly responsible for the Orlando massacre. They either don’t know or don’t care that assault rifles (fully automatic or capable of being fully automatic) are already banned for civilian purchase. The AR-15 Mateen used is not an assault rifle; it is a semi-automatic and 5 million Americans—law-abiding Americans like you and me—already own one. No doubt a more accurate Daily News’ headline would have been GUN FREE ZONE BLAMED FOR MASSACRE.
