Actually, as this mess unfolds, I am appalled at the situation the Democrats placed the people of this nation in by passing ObamaCare in the first place. You see, Obama could not muster the votes either to pass this legislation which amounted to over 2900 pages, much of which no one in the legislature read but passed down to their direct reports to read. Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi infamously remarked, “We have to pass this legislation in order to see what is in it,” a comment that has come back to haunt her, despite its unfortunate truth.
In order to avoid “No” votes within his own party, Obama had his folks write legislation which gave supreme authority to the then Secretary of Health & Human Services to define and implement the healthcare legislation after it was passed into law. This was the basis of Ms. Pelosi’s remark about finding out “what is in it.” It was a crassly political move as we were not meant to know what was in the legislation. Remember the flak Sarah Palin received for pointing out this would lead to “death panels” to decide our fate? In effect, the government would decide if you were too old for a pacemaker.
Now we are being told that in order to repeal ObamaCare, Congress must—through legislation— empower the Secretary of Health & Human Services to repeal and replace it. Can you believe such insanity? The Democrats, who must claim responsibility for this mess since not one Republican voted for it, claimed that they had improved healthcare for all Americans. No, what they did was create the basis for destroying private health care while cutting the financial legs off the insurance providers. Despite their claims that healthcare would be more affordable and you could keep your healthcare and insurance providers, these turned out to be bald-faced lies. Most Americans lost both and saw their premiums and annual deductibles skyrocket. Thus, they had “insurance” in name only because short of catastrophic health problems in any given year, they could not afford their deductibles.
From the outset, ObamaCare was supposed to provide needed healthcare coverage to over 30 million Americans who did not have coverage either because of pre-existing medical conditions, poverty, or they chose not to. According to the Kaiser Foundation, 47 million were not insured before ObamaCare. Through expanding Medicaid to pick up the poor, letting young people stay on their parents’ plans until the age of 26, and providing government subsidies to fund new plans under Obamacare, that number shrank to 26 million. Today the Democrats are whining that under the Republicans’ proposed replacement, 22 million will be uninsured.
President Trump ran on getting rid of ObamaCare but faces opposition on both sides of the aisle. The Left sees it as part of Obama’s legacy, despite the fact that it is a failure and destined to implode as insurance carriers drop out, as well as those wishing to be insured. After all, it was built on a socialist premise: the premiums of the young and healthy would pay for the old and sick. But the young and healthy rightly perceived this to be the case and opted out. On the Right, Republicans cannot get on the same page either because they lack the political will to take away an “entitlement,” or they prefer the status quo, or they want some goodies for their constituents. The overall welfare of the American people is seemingly not among their priorities.
The 4th of July will come and go once again as it does every year. We will celebrate our birth as a nation and the great vision that our founding fathers had for the wellbeing and protection of all Americans. They gave us the precious documents necessary to navigate the waters of the future, overcome the problems, and hold onto our liberty. Our elected idiots over the last few decades have done a bang-up job of attempting to destroy all that and rip the power of the people right out of our hands. It is time that we celebrate our independence by taking pen in hand and writing some very clear letters to those who sit in power in Washington to let them know that we don’t buy what they are selling and they’d better get to work fixing it.
